Psalm 37-  Analysed 

Psalm 37 revolves around a competitive narrative between the wicked and the righteous. It unequivocally declares the doom of wicked and compares it to the blessed eternity of the righteous. It also describes the character of a righteous person and God’s relationship with the righteous person. In the new testament times, these verses will portray the stark distinction between saints who are in the Lord and the unbelievers who are not.

1. The End & Destruction of Wicked

Psalm 37:2, 9, 10, 13, 15, 17, 20, 22, 28, 34, 35–36, 38

Psalm 37:2
For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, And wither as the green herb.

Psalm 37:9a
For evildoers shall be cut off…..

Psalm 37:10
For yet a little while and the wicked shall be no more; Indeed, you will look carefully for his place, But it shall be no more.

Psalm 37:13
The Lord laughs at him, For He sees that his day is coming.

Psalm 37:15
Their sword shall enter their own heart, And their bows shall be broken.

Psalm 37:17a
For the arms of the wicked shall be broken…..

Psalm 37:20
But the wicked shall perish; And the enemies of the Lord, Like the splendor of the meadows, shall vanish. Into smoke they shall vanish away.

Psalm 37:22b
…… But those cursed by Him shall be cut off.

Psalm 37:28b
…… But the descendants of the wicked shall be cut off.

Psalm 37:34b
…… When the wicked are cut off, you shall see it.

Psalm 37:35–36
I have seen the wicked in great power, And spreading himself like a native green tree.  Yet he passed away, and behold, he was no more; Indeed I sought him, but he could not be found.

Psalm 37:38
But the transgressors shall be destroyed together; The future of the wicked shall be cut off.

 

2. Nature of a Righteous Person

Psalm 37:1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 11, 21, 22, 26, 27, 30, 31, 34

a. Righteous dose not fret and envy

Psalm 37:1
Do not fret because of evildoers, Nor be envious of the workers of iniquity.

Psalm 37:8
Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; Do not fret—it only causes harm.

b. Righteous Delights in God

Psalm 37:4
Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

Psalm 37:11
But the meek shall inherit the earth, And shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

Psalm 37:31a
The law of his God is in his heart; ….

c. Righteous Trust God

Psalm 37:3
Trust in the Lord, and do good; Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness.

Psalm 37:5
Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass.

d. Righteous Waits on God

Psalm 37:7
Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass.

Psalm 37:9
For evildoers shall be cut off; But those who wait on the Lord, They shall inherit the earth.

Psalm 37:34a
Wait on the Lord, and keep His way, And He shall exalt you to inherit the land..

e. Righteous is Merciful & Giving

Psalm 37:21
The wicked borrows and does not repay, But the righteous shows mercy and gives.

Psalm 37:26
He is ever merciful, and lends; And his descendants are blessed.

f. Righteous is Meek & Wise

Psalm 37:11
But the meek shall inherit the earth, and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

Psalm 37:30
The mouth of the righteous speaks wisdom, and his tongue talks of justice.

g. Righteous does Good

Psalm 37:27
Depart from evil, and do good; And dwell forevermore.

Psalm 37:3
Trust in the Lord, and do good;

 

3. God’s Relation with the Righteous

Psalm 37:4, 5, 6, 17, 18, 19, 23–24, 28, 31, 33, 34, 39, 40

a. God Establishes the Righteous

Psalm 37:23–24
The steps of a good man are ordered(established) by the Lord, And He delights in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; For the Lord upholds him with His hand.

Psalm 37:4
Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

Psalm 37:5
Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass.

Psalm 37:22a
For those blessed by Him shall inherit the earth…

b. God Protects the Righteous

Psalm 37:24
Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; For the LORD upholds him with His hand.

Psalm 37:31b
…. None of his steps will slide.

Psalm 37:40
And the Lord shall help them and deliver them; He shall deliver them from the wicked, And save them, Because they trust in Him.

Psalm 37:17b
….. the Lord upholds the righteous.

Psalm 37:19
They shall not be ashamed in the evil time, And in the days of famine they shall be satisfied.

 Psalm 37:39b
…. He is their strength in the time of trouble.

c. God gives Salvation to the Righteous

Psalm 37:39a
But the salvation of the righteous is from the LORD…..

Psalm 37:33
The Lord will not leave him in his hand, Nor condemn him when he is judged.

Psalm 37:6
He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light, And your justice as the noonday.

 d. God Preserves the Righteous

Psalm 37:28a
For the Lord loves justice, And does not forsake His saints; They are preserved forever….

Psalm 37:18
The Lord knows the days of the upright, And their inheritance shall be forever.

Psalm 37:34a
Wait on the Lord, And keep His way, And He shall exalt you to inherit the land….

 

4. The End of a Righteous Person

Psalm 37:9, 11, 18, 22, 25, 29, 34, 37

Psalm 37:9b
…. those who wait on the Lord, They shall inherit the earth.

Psalm 37:11
But the meek shall inherit the earth, And shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

Psalm 37:18
The Lord knows the days of the upright, And their inheritance shall be forever.

Psalm 37:22b
For those blessed by Him shall inherit the earth…

Psalm 37:25
I have been young, and now am old; Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his descendants begging bread.

Psalm 37:29
The righteous shall inherit the land, And dwell in it forever.

Psalm 37:34a
Wait on the Lord, and keep His way, And He shall exalt you to inherit the land…

Psalm 37:37
Mark the blameless man, and observe the upright; For the future(end) of that man is peace
